The Buriganga River holds Dhaka City at its Bank. Millions of people Wash, fish, and belong livelihood with this river daily. This river holds the main transportation route to connect the capital town with the rest of the country. But, the water of this river has become poisonous due to filling with tonnes of daily wastage, plastic usage, tannery waste, human sewage, and industrial waste thrown toward the river daily. The water has become as poisonous and dark as the water from sewerage drain lines. But responsible administrative inaction is unintelligible to save this river. The days are no longer far when this river will be finally dead & we will pay a high cost to face the rag of it. It is like an assassination of a river & pushing ourselves towards the sharp edge of destruction.
Discharge of industrial effluent. Industries along the banks of the river are responsible for water pollution. These industrial installations include tanneries, dyeing industries, aluminum, iron, and steel workshops, plastic, pharmaceuticals, battery manufacturing, washing, hardware, and cold storage units.
There are some diffuse sources including the dumping of solid wastes along the banks in a scattered manner by riverside dwellers, leakage of oil from floating oil-seller boats and direct disposal of wastes (like the residue of food, and human excreta).
Discharge of massive amounts of untreated municipal wastewater and sewage directly into Buriganga through the city drains and sewers is also responsible for the pollution of Buriganga.
